Elmer Studios began when two Aussie blokes thought that MSTings were cool, and that they wanted to do a whole heap of them themselves. The problem was that they had very little knowledge of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and its characters. (All they had seen was MST3K the Movie, albeit about a half-dozen times or so). So, they decided to improvise and use their own characters.
Elmer Studios' first fifty MSTings contained a number of experiments with different characters and formats. It also contained a number of different attempts to find particular types of fanfic that the MSTers wanted to riff. Some shows, like Tenchi Myuo!, El Hazard and Robotech were experimented with, but never really used. Others, like Sailor Moon were tried and did well, but faded out in favour of other things.
This era of Elmer studios had the most varied cast, as different characters were tried. The initial cast, Dan, Tsuneo Taeto, Rebecca Bartley and Rick R. Mortis, were there on a "try out" basis, but ended up becoming permanent. Others would appear, in the forms of Natasha Isavia, Celena Harte, Janice Ryalle, Maya Gold, Karen McMillain and Elana. Some would appear numerous times, and some would only appear twice or so. None of them ever became as popular as the first four however. Thus Elmer Studios main cast would become defined through experimentation.
Several particular moments occurred during this period. Elmer Studios was the first MSTing series to work on Evangelion fanfics, and self-insertion series in particular. A stand-out moment was the "SVAM Edition" of the Neon Exodus Evangelion series, which is still with Elmer Studios to this day.
Towards the end of this period, Elmer Studios began to develop the Evangelion self-insertion fanfic as their particular "signature" style of fanfic to MST. This would lead itself to possibly Elmer Studios' greatest legend...
